Roku lowers prices across the board: HD box now $69, $99 HD-XR to get 1080p support
Looks like Roku's going aggressive on price with its lineup of streamers in response to Sony's new $130 Netbox streamer, the upcoming Google TV launch, and rumors that we'll see that rumored $99 iOS-based Apple TV arrive on Wednesday. The SD box is down to $59 from $79, the standard HD is now $69 from $99, and the HD-XR with dual-band 802.11n and soon-to-be-enabled USB playback support is now $99 from $129. The HD-XR is also due to get 1080p streaming support later this year; it'll be focused on USB playback at first since most of the streaming channels are 720p right now.
Those prices are definitely getting close to impulse-buy territory, especially since a Roku is now one of the cheapest ways to get Netflix and Amazon VOD on a TV, along with other channels like MLB and UFC. In fact, Roku says its goal is to put three streamers in every house -- one next to every TV in the average American home. When you arrive to pick up your credentials at a motorcycle racing event, they make you sign a form. On that form, you are informed that motorsports are dangerous in whatever capacity you attend, and you do so at your own risk. If you don't sign the form, you don't get your passes, that's how seriously they take this.
For this is something that race fans tend to forget: motorcycle racing really is dangerous. For years now we've been spoiled, with riders invariably getting up and walking away, or at worst being flown out to the nearest hospital in a medivac helicopter, making their return with steel pins holding broken bones together, after missing just a handful of races. Only occasionally does it end badly, such as when Craig Jones was killed in a World Supersport race at Brands Hatch in 2008, or when Daijiro Katoh suffered fatal injuries during the 2003 Japanese MotoGP round at Suzuka.
But even those accidents were a sign of how things have changed. In the early years of Grand Prix racing, all the way through to the mid-1970s, Grand Prix racing would lose a handful of riders every season. Protective gear has improved vastly over the years, and the track especially have seen huge changes, with street circuits disappearing, hard obstacles being removed and walls being pushed back as far as possible, and then covered in air fence for good measure.read more

LG's Android-based Optimus Pad gets pictured, looking tablet-like
We've already heard LG talk up its forthcoming Optimus tablet, and it looks like we now have our first look at it. As you can see above in a slide apparently shown during LG's pre-IFA Dealer Days event, the Android-based tablet is now apparently known as the "Optimus Pad," and it's described as boasting "superior performance" and being "thinner and lighter than many competitors' tablets." Not much more than that at the moment, unfortunately, but here's hoping that "more information to come" teaser is a lead-up to a full announcement at IFA this week.

Afrojack Wants 'Take Over Control' To Be 'Big All Over The World'

Afrojack dropped his single "Take Over Control" on Monday, and with its release, the Dutch DJ/producer seems intent on expanding his self-invented "bleepy" sound to a mass audience.
"Popwise, I'm working with a girl called Eva Simons," Afrojack told MTV News earlier this year. "She's also from Holland. We have one track together called 'Take Over Control' that's gonna be the first dance/bleepy pop song," he explained at the time.
Afrojack was widely celebrated at this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami, with many of the genre's heavy-hitters commending his new contribution to electronic/dance music. The song is already a hit in Europe, and after performing it during sets throughout his 2010 North American tour and at Los Angeles' Electric Daisy Festival, "Take Over" has become something of a set staple for DJs.
"I think ... Well, I hope, it's gonna be big all over the world," Afrojack (born Nick Van de Wall) said. "Ministry of Sound wants to push money into it. Everybody wants to push it, and make it into the new revolution song. So, I'm so lucky that they have chosen this song."
Popularizing his bleepy Holland House sound might be a lesson gleaned from his mentor and frequent collaborator, David Guetta, who in a show of support posted a Beatport.com link to "Take Over" Monday morning. Once considered solely a house music star, Guetta has within the past two years become a global crossover pop success by "urbanizing" what the mainstream American music scene had long considered a niche category.
"He's like my big brother. I was never into pop stuff," Afrojack said of Guetta. "I was never into the charts, and TV and everything, but he introduced me to it and let me know how it worked and how it was fun to make. I started making a little bit of pop music on the side just for fun and it actually turned out pretty well. So we are doing some big things. Hopefully doing some stuff with Britney Spears.
"He was in the studio with me the first time he finished the new song for Rihanna," Afrojack continued. "He was like, 'OMG. You gotta hear this ... it's crazy. So I was expecting some crazy club sh--. But he played me that track and it was a good [pop] track. So that's what inspired me to do that."
Fans can purchase the "Take Over Control" download at Beatport.com or hear it live when Afrojack performs this Saturday at New York's Electric Zoo electronic music festival. He's joined on the lineup by Armin van Buuren, Diplo, Avicii, Wolfgang Gartner and Axwell, among many other acts at the two-day event.

Rogers has begun selling the LG Loop. You may remember it as the LG Optimus, which we've had our hands on at CES in January, and again at Google IO in May. Not really that much to be said, other than it's another notch in the ol' Android belt. This trend is likely to continue as it is installed in more low to middle end phones that customers transitioning from feature phones are likely to start with before jumping for the expensive devices. As they familiarize themselves with the Android platform, these phones, like the Loop, will ease them into it rather than diving into the complex stuff out of the gate. This will increase their chances of choosing better Android phones in the future because they're already used to the platform. All in all, not a great phone to add to the army, but a signal of a trend that Android is going to proliferate throughout all phones, not just the top dogs. Inbox Hero: Gmail Priority Inbox Has Doused My Raging Email Fire ? For Now
Hopefully you're reading this as you're waking up with access to Gmail Priority Inbox. Jason already posted his review/overview last night, so I figured I'd just talk a bit about how I've been using it for the past several days since Google turned it on for me to test out on my account. My opinion of it is in-line with Jason's -- once you fine-tune it, it's game-changingly awesome. There is simply no way I could ever go back to using Gmail without it enabled. So how have I tuned it?
First of all, before you get started, I highly recommend that you watch the overview video Google made for the feature. It's two minutes long, and makes the basics easy to understand. For most people, the basics are probably good enough. But for people who get a lot of email, you're going to want to go a bit deeper.
My favorite aspect of Priority Inbox is the settings that allows you to create four different sections of your inbox. Yes, you could previously do this with the Multiple Inboxes feature, but these new settings make things much easier to understand and implement. The three default sections here are: "Important & unread," "Starred," and "Everything else" -- but there's an option to add a fourth, which you should. You should create a new label that you can quickly tag emails with. For example, I chose "A1" since "A" shows up first in the Labels drop down menu. Set this section (which is actually the second section) to show emails with that label.

If only Justin Bieber were 18, then he might have a shot at scoring a date with his pal and Elle photo-shoot partner, Kim Kardashian. When the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star stopped by "Lopez Tonight" on Tuesday night, she admitted that if their age difference wasn't so large (she's 29, he's 16), she might be attracted to the chart-topping, mop-headed pop singer.
"If he was of legal age, I said Justin Bieber has, like, this swag to him," she said, according to E! Online. "You just have to meet him. He definitely has this swag to him."
While the "Graduate"-inspired photo shoot of the pair frolicking on the beach seems pretty harmless, TV pundit Bill O'Reilly found the photos inappropriate and criticized them.
For her part, Kardashian doesn't see the controversy in the photos. "I thought that the shoot was all in fun. We had a good time," she said on "Lopez." "Everyone's entitled to their own opinion on it, but we were just having a good time and the amazing creative team at Elle magazine obviously thought it was a great shoot. Everyone's loved it.
It was all in fun.'
Bieber, however, may have some competition. Kardashian teases that there might already be someone special in her life. She said, "You never know. Maybe someone has [come into my life]. You never know."
Earlier this year, when he stopped by VMA host Chelsea Handler's talk show, "Chelsea Lately," Bieber admitted he wouldn't mind scoring a date with the reality starlet. "Well, I mean, she actually said, or Kim said, 'I think Justin Bieber should date my sister,' " he recalled of Kardashian trying to set up Biebs with her younger sister. "And I was like, 'I think I should date you.' "
Handler may have summed it up best when she quipped, "Basically, what's happening is, you made it OK to flirt with underage people."

RV Dealer Offers Unique Settlement For Taylor Lautner's Lawsuit
The RV dealership that Taylor Lautner is suing for failure to deliver his custom RV trailer on time has come up with a unique proposal to settle the claim.
Brent McMahon, who owns McMahon?s RV, has suggested that the two have a push up contest to settle the matter out of court. He is adamant that he isn't in the wrong and plans to defend himself in court, but thought the two could settle it in a more charitable way.
The 47-year-old businessman said if he won the contest, he would donate the settlement money to Children?s Hospital of Orange County.
Taylor is suing him for $40,000 - that would be a nice chunk of change for the hospital. What do you think of the proposal? I'm doubtful that Taylor will go for it.
You have to wonder how long it will be until the Twilight fans know which trailer is Taylor's since it's decked out with a custom paint job and all that. He'll need extra security to keep the fans away from it.

Rihanna is bringing her Last Girl on Earth Tour to Madison Square Garden on Thursday night (August 12), and that means opening act Ke$ha is feeling particularly nervous. Why? Well, it's Madison Square Garden!
"I'm actually a little petrified, to be honest. It's a landmark in my career, and it's just an epic venue. ... I'm just really excited, and I'm gonna try to kill it!" she told MTV News. "It definitely means a lot for me to be playing there, especially with Rihanna, 'cause she's so incredible. It makes me feel like I'm finally arriving here!"
The girls kicked off the tour earlier this summer, and the "Tik Tok" singer said she and Rihanna have had some fun times on the road together. "It's amazing! She's just a badass," she said. "I saw her yesterday, and she spanked me — always keeping me on my toes. She's the sickest."
With all that time together, have the girls discussed working together? "I would love to. I mean, it's kind of been tossed around," she said. "There's not really much time that we've spent writing and stuff on this tour, because it's been so crazy, but it's definitely an idea I'm not opposed to."
Ke$ha said she's learning tons from Rihanna on tour. "I don't know what she would be learning from me, aside from how to look like a maniac, but I definitely learned a lot from her," she said. "I've only been performing pop music for under a year, so I'm relatively new to the arena thing. It's terrifying, so I really do, every night, watch her, and she's so graceful and so sweet and so badass."
Her best advice? "She just always has such a good attitude. You just have to own it!"

Penn-Frank Edgar. This is a heck of an opportunity for Maynard, who enters the cage for just the 10th time in his career. Maynard has added to game over the years but he's still a wrestler by trade. The last time we saw Kenny Florian face an elite former college wrestler, he basically spent the entire time on his back against Sean Sherk. But that was almost four years ago and Florian is a much more well-rounded fighter now. Who's helped Florian shore up the holes in his wrestling game recently? UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre. "I don't think you can get a better (training) partner at this point (to work on your wrestling). George really is at the top of his game. His wrestling is second to none," said Florian co-trainer Firas Zahabi, who is also the trainer for GSP (1:45 mark). "He's never competed as a wrestler, not very much (but) his wrestling, don't be mistaken, it's the best. Nobody's watched GSP train more than I have and I've seen him go with top level wrestlers and I'll tell you, he has taken everyone he's ever wrestled or sparred with down repeatedly."While on ProMMARadio (1:02:30 mark), Florian raved about how much St. Pierre has helped him with his grappling. "I consider him the best wrestler in mixed martial arts," said Florian (Audio clip). "He's about 200 pounds right now, very quick, very strong. I've been training with him for the last three fights. I know I'll be ready. Georges has helped me so much with my wrestling and overall game that I feel like this is the best point to meet a guy like Gray Maynard." The transformation from solid jiu-jitsu and striking artist to a complete fighter hasn't happened overnight for Florian. "Beating a guy like Gray or stopping his wrestling in one training camp is not going to happen. That's the reality of it. So I've been working on it for a long time now," said Florian (14-4, 11-3 UFC). "I've also been working a lot with John Cholish, who wrestled over at Cornell, he was an All-American there. I've been bringing a lot of guys in." This fight could come down to Maynard's work with boxing coach Gil Martinez. If Maynard (9-0, 7-0 UFC) can't score the takedown then he'll need to outstrike Florian. That won't be easy. After working heavily over the last few years with boxing coach Peter Welch, Florian is a good volume puncher, who's broken down several opponents on the feet before getting them down and finishing fights via submission.

'Breaking Dawn' Star Nikki Reed Is 'Starting To Get' Justin Bieber

When it comes to rabid fans, it would seem that the "Twilight" franchise fanbase and that of teen chart-topper Justin Bieber have a lot in common. For instance, both have extremely dedicated fans, complete with playful nicknames — Twilighters and Beliebers. Both groups are prone to burst into ear-piercing screams and heavily influence awards-show voting. So when MTV News recently caught up with "Breaking Dawn" star Nikki Reed, we asked whether she had any special insight into Bieber Fever, having experienced the kind of fan-demonium he has.
"I didn't really understand that for a while, and I finally get it," she said about the singer while promoting her new flick "Last Day of Summer."
Reed said her "a-ha" moment came when she stumbled upon vintage Bieber videos online, which show the singer at 6 years old, playing guitar on the side of the road. "The excitement and passion in his eyes and his voice, this little tiny kid holding this big huge guitar ... he's singing, his voice penetrates into the world," Reed recalled. "People across the street were listening, it's truly incredible. He's a talented kid."
The "Twilight" actress added that while she might not personally fit into his demographic, she has slowly come to realize the power of Bieber. "He's got a very specific look and style thing that he's going for. I didn't understand or connect with that [at first], just like the Jonas Brothers, but I'm starting to get it with the Biebs."

StreamTV Elocity A7 tablet packs Tegra 2 and Android 2.2, coming to Amazon for $399 in September
We can't say we'd ever heard of StreamTV, but all the company had to say was "Tegra 2 Android Froyo tablet" to get us to meet up with them in NYC earlier today. The Philadelphia start-up is planning to bring its Elocity A7 -- essentially a re-badged Compal's NAZ-10 -- to an Amazon order page near you, and from what we saw during the hour-long demo it may just be a contender for your stashed away $399. The 7-inch tablet has an extremely responsive 800 x 480 resolution, capacitive touchscreen -- yes, multitouch worked in the browser and photo gallery -- with a front-facing 1.3 megapixel cam on the left bezel. We actually got to make a quick Fring video call to one of the other tablets in the room, though it was rather lagging since we were running over it all 3G.
Surrounding the tablet is an SD card slot along with USB and HDMI ports, the latter of which did come very handy for hooking up the tablet to a 22-inch HDTV and watching an extremely smooth 1080p clip. (Thank you 1GHz Tegra II-720 CPU!) Speaking of, we also got to play a racing game, Asphalt 5, on the device, though the accelerometer steering was a bit flaky. Besides that, we've got to say the entire tablet experience was pretty smooth -- you can see for yourself after the break and in the upcoming episode of the Engadget Show -- but the unit we saw was running Android 2.1. The SteamTV's CEO says they'll only be shipping 2.2-running units come October and with a supplemental GetJar app store since it cannot preload Google's Marketplace because of restrictions. He also tells us they'll be including an HDMI cord and wireless keyboard in the box -- all for $399. It all sounds rather promising, but so do all these future Android tablets! It didn't take long for the Kanye West-Justin Bieber collaboration to come to fruition. Just days after tweeting about a possible joint project, West let fans know that he's nearly finished remixing Bieber's "Runaway Love."
Early on Thursday (August 19), West tweeted, "Finishing @JustinBieber Runaway Love remix too... don't know when they gonna drop it but Raekwon's verse is crazy!!!"
Prior to jumping on the track, Wu-Tang rapper Raekwon confirmed that he was working toward getting the West-Bieber project off the ground. "It's definitely gonna happen," he told XXL magazine. "When you got these kinda talents merging together to do something exciting, I think it's something that's gonna make the fans check it out. I'm big fans of both of these guys. I think, at the end of the day, shorty is a sensation. And [for him] to acknowledge me, it makes me feel good that the young generation is checkin' me out like that. And at the same time it gives me a position to play a big brother in the game. He wants my assistance or whatever, he can get it. I respect him, I like his style."
Its' been quite a week for Bieber, who re-tweeted Raekwon's XXL confirmation. In addition to having West and Raekwon work their magic on his song, it was just announced that the VMA-nominated singer will also perform at the big show. He tweeted his excitement, saying, "Performing at this years VMA's!!! Last year i went and no one knew who i was and this year gonna PERFORM!!! Wild!! DREAM BIG!"
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET.
